A door that has jumped its tracks is the one that looks worst and frightens people most. It is also one of the more recoverable problems, provided nobody tries to force it back into place first.

Forcing a door back onto its track bends the track, wrecks the rollers and can bring the whole thing down. Leave it exactly where it is, do not run the opener, and keep people and cars out from underneath it.
One of the most common causes we see, and usually less expensive than it looks. A door that has taken a knock often goes back on the track with a panel and a few rollers to sort out rather than a whole new door.
The rollers run in a steel channel. Anything that lets a roller out of that channel, or pulls the door out of square while it is moving, will put it off. That is usually an obstruction, an impact, a failed cable or spring, or rollers worn to the point where the stems no longer hold.
A door does not come off for no reason. Reseating it is the easy part — the repair that lasts is the one that establishes what put it off in the first place.
Five causes account for nearly all of them, and they need different repairs, which is why we look before we lift.
A bin, a ladder, a bike, a bag of compost. The door closes onto it, one side stops and the other keeps going, and that twist is enough to lift a roller out of the channel.
When a cable lets go, one side of the door drops instantly while the other stays up. The door goes out of square in a fraction of a second and off the track with it. In these cases the track is the symptom, not the fault.
Reversing into the door, or a trailer catching it. The panel takes the hit and the rollers on that side come out. Damage is often limited to one or two sections.
Roller stems wear, bearings seize, and a roller that no longer turns is being dragged rather than rolled. Eventually one leaves the channel on its own, with no impact and nothing in the way.
Years of vibration loosen the brackets holding the track to the wall and ceiling. A track that has shifted even slightly out of line gives the rollers somewhere to escape.

✓ Take the weight off it properly rather than levering it back
✓ Reseat the door and check every roller on both sides
✓ Straighten or replace track that has been bent
✓ Check cables, drums and springs, since one of them is often the cause
✓ Re-square and balance the door, then test the safety reverse
Occasionally a panel is damaged badly enough that putting the door back on the track is not the right answer. If that is where we end up we will show you why rather than reseating a bent door and calling it finished.

What people ask us most when a door has come off its track.
We would strongly advise against it. The door is heavy, it is unsupported in that state, and levering it back is how tracks get bent and people get hurt. It also tends to turn a straightforward reseat into a track replacement.
Usually not. Most off-track doors go back on with rollers, some track work and a re-balance. It is only when a panel has been badly deformed that replacement comes into it, and we will show you the panel rather than just telling you.
No. The opener will keep pulling against a door that cannot move, which damages the door, the track and the opener all at once. Leave it alone until someone has had a look.
Most are finished in the same visit. It takes longer when the track has to be replaced or when a cable or spring failed first and needs sorting at the same time.
Almost always worn rollers or a cable that failed. Rollers wear out quietly and one eventually leaves the channel on its own. That is why we check the rollers on both sides rather than only the one that came off.
